Loveland Loves Making Great Water
SolarBee® Lake Circulators are a first in line treatment strategy for source raw water reservoirs.
Loveland Water & Power (Loveland, Colorado) produced an amazing video detailing their mitigation strategies to combat taste and odor issues in their drinking water system. Medora Corporation & SolarBee® Lake Circulators are proud to be an important part of their efforts! Check out their video below. We have it set to the “SolarBee Section” but if you have time, watch it in its entirety to get a good overall sense of their big picture strategies.
Great Water Treatment Starts At The Source
Treat harmful algal blooms (HABs) where they start.
From the water treatment plant on down the line, there are lots of different tools and strategies drinking water systems use to maintain great water for their Customers. One often overlooked treatment strategy starts right at the source water reservoir before the water even enters a pipe. Treating lakes and reservoirs with epilimnetic circulation to help control cyanobacteria (a.k.a. blue-green algae) blooms has been proven to be a very effective first step to provide the best water for the treatment plant.
Taste & Odor
Invariably, water with taste & odor issues will get the phone to ring for any drinking water system. In most cases, it can be attributed to two compounds, MIB (2-methylisoborneol) and geosmin (trans-1, 10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol). Cyanobacteria have been found to be a major contributor of MIB and geosmin in source water reservoirs and by having an effective cyanobacteria mitigation strategy in place, any associated taste and odor releases can be minimized or avoided altogether.
Epilimnetic circulation can also help with another cyanobacteria elephant in the room...
Cyanotoxins
Another cyanobacteria bloom side-effect is the production of cyanotoxins. While cyanotoxins have been known about for quite some time, overall understanding, testing, and mitigation strategies are just beginning to take root. In plain speak, cyanotoxins are powerful poisons produced by cyanobacteria.
There may be over 100 cyanobacteria specific poisons (mycrocystin, cylindrospermopsin, and anatoxin-a to name a few). You will often hear about the death of dogs, cattle, and other animals after coming into direct contact with cyanobacteria blooms. While human exposure has rarely caused immediate fatalities, these toxins have been linked to many auto-immune diseases in humans (i.e. Alzheimer’s) that can take a long time to manifest. By controlling cyanobacteria blooms at the source with proven SolarBee® circulation, the chance of cyanotoxin release and potential negative effects can be greatly reduced.
Improved Water Quality In The Reservoir Is Improved Water Quality In The Tap
Quite simply, proven cyanobacteria control through epilimnetic circulation makes better water for everyone one and everything. Medora Corporation and SolarBee® Lake Circulators have been the most beneficial and successful solution in the “blue-green algae battle” for over 15 years.
