Tank Ice and Tank Damage
If you have one, you're at risk for the other.
For those of us who live in “cold country" where winter temperatures consistently drop below freezing, ice in your potable water storage tanks is an ever-present threat. Serious tank damage and serious repair costs can occur if tank ice is not addressed.
"Raise The Roof"
Consider this example of how quickly ice build-up can cause major problems for a potable water tank. Ice build-up inside the tank interfered with the tank water-level sensor which in turn triggered a never-ending fill cycle. With the tank now in a constant overflow condition, the floating ice cap was forced upward and literally “raised the roof”. To make a bad situation worse, repairs of this kind are not a fast process. It took nearly a year for this tank to be repaired and placed back in operation.
Tank mixing can make ice problems melt away…
IXOM Watercare potable water storage tank mixers utilize complete floor to surface mixing to minimize ice formation. Water entering your tank contains much needed and valuable BTUs (heat) that, when properly mixed, help minimize ice formation in the tank. Warmer incoming water plus active mixing equals an effective ice fighter. Simple as that.
However, there are cases in low use tanks when not enough water (and not enough BTUs) enter a tank to reliably combat ice formation. Please contact us to discuss your particular situation.
But what about tank cycling?
We often hear that cycling the tank is all that is needed to control ice. While cycling does bring in warmer water and more BTUs, these BTUs are mostly ineffective and wasted without thorough mixing and proper circulation. In short, tank mixing is the key for any ice mitigation strategy.
