Odors Can Happen In Activated Sludge Systems

Odors are rarely an issue going through the plant but where they can become trouble is at the front end in your Equalization Ponds or on the back end in your waste activated sludge storage ponds.

Odors in this situation are normally caused by anaerobic conditions gassing off into the atmosphere.  These gasses can be stabilized into odorless forms when they come into contact with dissolved oxygen in the water column whereas lack of dissolved oxygen will allow these gasses to escape into the atmosphere (which can trigger odor complaints from neighboring communities).
